Nutrient Deficiencies

The body’s ability to absorb nutrients is hindered by exhaustion of nutrients. An autoimmune response can be triggered depending on the deficiency.

Deficiency in Selenium: A deficiency in Selenium is associated with Hashimoto’s and it forms part of the antioxidant group. Antioxidants protect the body against reactive oxygen species by acting as free radicals and a deficiency can lead to thyroid damage from reactive oxygen species like hydrogen peroxide.

Vitamin E, Vitamin C, selenium, manganese and beta-carotene are antioxidants. It’s not recommended for one to follow the RDA for antioxidants since it’s too low and one may not notice the benefit.

Low stomach acid: In addition low stomach acid deficiency can lead to acid reflux. Low stomach acid hinders the absorption and breakdown of proteins therefore when it occurs, there’ll be a depletion of zinc, iron, amino acids and other nutrients derived from proteins. The body can be replenished by taking apple cider vinegar and lemon juice since they increase stomach acid. Symptoms of low stomach acid include heartburn, gas and heaviness in the stomach especially after taking a meal rich in protein.

B12: A deficiency in vitamin B12 can also result in inflammation, improper digestion and poor development of the villi that stores digestive enzymes. Hashimoto’s and low stomach acid may lead to vitamin B12 deficiency. B12 is found in dairy products, fish, meat and supplements are also available. This enzyme helps in absorption through protease and hydrochloric acid. It becomes a vicious cycle when digestion is improper because one may be eating the right foods but the body isn’t getting the nutrients and eventually one becomes deficient.

Zinc: It has a role in cell division, protein synthesis, immune function and DNA synthesis yet it must be ingested since it can’t be stored in the body. Zinc also speeds up approximately 100 body reactions and is required for other functions like thyroid function and detoxification. It can be found in meat and in supplement form.

Iron: Iron is stored in Ferritin since one’s body doesn’t produce it hence the need for it to be ingested. Iron deficiency leads to hair loss and heavy menstruation in women.
